Update: Teen Charged For Crash That Killed Child, Injured 5 Others On Long Island

A teenager has been arrested and charged for a car crash that killed a child and injured five others, himself included, police announced.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, Nassau County Police announced that 18-year-old Jorge Bonilla Gutierrez of Freeport was arrested in connection to an Aug. 7 West Hempstead incident. 

At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, Gutierrez was allegedly driving his SUV down Hempstead Turnpike, going east.

He was traveling at a high speed when, near the intersection of Westminster Road, the SUV collided with a parked Toyota Corolla.

Three people were inside, and two were standing outside of the Corolla.

Gutierrez and all five victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Katerine Vanegas-Hernandez, a 6-year-old girl from West Hempstead, was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

The condition and identities of the other injured victims have not been released.

Gutierrez is charged with:

  • Manslaughter
  • Vehicular manslaughter
  • Assault (one count second-degree and three counts third-degree)
  • DWI

He is scheduled to be arraigned bedside on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
